FAQs

  • It’s a surprise! We’ll be learning 15 or 16 wonderful songs aligned with our theme this season, 4-6 of which have been written by our collaborator Lyndsey Scott. Some songs are very simple and easy to learn, and some have more complexity. Most all of our lyrics this season will be in English. I’ll start dribbling out previews of the songs this spring to registered singers. It’s a wonderful lineup!

  • Lyndsey is a talented, widely-respected leader in the community singing movement. Learn more about her here. She may be best known for her widely traveling song, The Way Knows the Way.

Lyndsey resides in Iowa City, Iowa where she was a University of Iowa fellow last year. She will be joining us in person for at least one practice in each location, plus the August 8 retreat, and all concerts.

  • Please consider:

    1. You can sing your favorite songs any time. Each Wholehearted season is curated to present a cohesive message that appeals to our whole, diverse community.

    2. It is genuinely impossible to pick a set that will be everyone’s favorite. If you think a song or musical style is unworthy of a try, we’re probably not the right place for you, and that’s ok!

    3. Songs are dynamic. We will bring these songs to life and give them power through our unique arrangements and shared commitment to them. It's very common for singers to feel humdrum about a song at the beginning of the season and to genuinely love it the BEST by the end. We make the magic together.

  • No. We endeavor to be a non-dogmatic sanctuary for all who want to sing. We welcome diverse backgrounds, singing experience, and worldviews, and we aren’t for everyone. All singers who join us should find easy alignment with our core values. Find those here.

  • If you don’t know what voice part you sing yet, that is absolutely fine! We’ll help you find the right place for you. We’ll also share vocal practice resources so you can keep growing your vocal range. It’s a joy to be versatile!

  • We want singers who can be with us in person for most rehearsals.  And we do have folks that make a significant commute to rehearsals!  If you commit to attending the majority of the rehearsals and learn the songs, we welcome you.

  • Season tuition goes up to $350 on April 1 , then to $390 May 18.

  • Sorry, not this year. For ease in administration we are offering our discounts through early registration. Sign up before April 1 for the best deal.

  • If you start the season with us and then decide it's not your thing, no problem. We'll refund your registration minus a $50 administration fee until July 1.

If you drop after July 1, your registration fee is non-refundable and non-transferable for any reason. We organize many aspects of our concert planning around an accurate number of singers in the chorus, so we can’t make exceptions once we really get going. Thanks for your understanding!

  • Let’s talk! Please fill out the registration form and let us know what would make it accessible for you. We are not offering full scholarships or work trades this season, but if you can meet us most of the way, or if payment timing is an issue, please just ask for what you need in the registration form.

We prioritize financial support for BIPOC & historically underserved singers. We always need baritones too, so we can be more flexible with tuition if you’re a singer in that voice range.

  • Yes! We've partnered with Klarna, a third-party payment provider, to offer flexible installment plans at checkout.

    How it works:

    • After selecting the “Credit Card/ Bank/ +Apple or Google Pay/ Installments” option on the registration page, click on the shopping cart icon, then “Checkout”, then “More Payment Options”, enter your email address, “Continue”, then select the “Klarna” option to split your payment into installments (such as 4 interest-free payments)

    • Klarna manages all payment collection and scheduling

    • You'll receive payment reminders directly from Klarna

    Important to know:

    • Payment responsibility: Once you select a Klarna plan, you're responsible for making payments to Klarna according to their schedule. Missed payments may result in late fees and could be reported to credit bureaus if sent to collections.

    • Credit impact: Klarna typically performs a soft credit check for standard "Pay in 4" options (with no impact on your score), while longer-term financing options may trigger a hard inquiry (which can temporarily lower your credit score). On-time payments on standard plans generally aren't reported to credit bureaus, but seriously late or missed payments may negatively affect your credit.

    • Refunds: If you request a refund under our policy (a full $320 refund minus a $50 admin fee by July 1), we'll process it through our system, and Klarna will automatically adjust your remaining payment plan. Please submit refund requests promptly to ensure Klarna can process the adjustment (typically within 120 days of purchase).

For questions about your Klarna payment plan or account, please contact Klarna directly through their app or customer support KlarnaCustomer service | Klarna US(888) 518-2771.

  • If you aren't planning to sing in the concert(s): No problem! Do what you like.

If you do plan to sing in the concert(s) (and we hope you will): Please make a real commitment to attend the majority of the rehearsals (at least 8 in San Diego or at least 6 in Carmel.)  Talk with us about personal hardships or special circumstances of course – we're not unfeeling jerks – but really, please do everything in your power to be with us in person for the whole season.  Our group vibe, season momentum, and overall cohesion immeasurably benefits from the presence of your real-life body and voice.

That said, please do not come if you are under the weather!

  • No.  The season registration to participate is the same for all singers, at any level of participation.  If you need financial assistance, please apply through the registration form and we will see what funds are available through the generosity of our other members.

  • We love your kids and we want them to grow up surrounded by singing people!  That said, we aim to strike a balance where the overall atmosphere at practices is peaceful for learners who need an environment without distraction.  So if you bring your kids, please enroll them in a culture of both welcome and quiet (like a library.) Please invite them to whisper when they need to talk with you, and bring books, videos (with headphones), art or other quiet activities for them.  For young children, if they cry or need support, please bring them to a room outside the main space until they settle.  You are very welcome to come and go from the space according to their needs.

    ***San Diego parents***

If there's enough interest, we are considering offering childcare this season. Let us know in your registration form if that would be helpful, along with how old your kids are.

  • Singers of all ages who have the ability to learn the songs and participate in focused rehearsals without distraction are welcome here.  There is no separate kids chorus. This level of focus and commitment is most suitable for motivated kids ages 12 and up, who should be accompanied with a singing parent or guardian. Kids pay ½ tuition.

  • No. Singing in the concerts is optional, but encouraged! Either way, we ask all singers to commit to sing and be present with us through the full season. For most singers, the concerts are a true highlight and culmination of the season experience. We will ask you to commit one way or the other around July so we can complete our concert planning. Our final rehearsal will just be for concert singers.
